The shooting at a primary school in Nashville, the capital of the American state of Tennessee, and the killing of six people, including three innocent children, has shocked everyone. Around 200 children study in this school.
Among those killed, two children were eight years old and one was nine years old. The age of the other three deceased was 60 years. Audrey Haley, 28, who was killed in police action, is transgender. The police were unable to determine whether it was a man or a woman.
The killer is a former student of the same school. The map of the school and information about the surveillance at the entrance and exit doors of the school have also been obtained from him. His intention was to strike at other places besides this school.
He set out to carry out this massacre with two assault rifles and a gun. However, the school was shot during the shooting, so many people in other places were saved. Even schools and educational institutions in America are not safe. The list of school massacres here is shocking.
In the year 2020, 118, 250 in 2021 and 300 school shooting incidents were reported last year. These incidents include mass shootings, gang shootings, fights at sports events and head-to-head clashes at school events.
Last year, 80 such incidents became reasons for brawls among the students. In 43 percent of the incidents, current and former students of the school opened fire. In the past five years, school shootings have killed or injured 1,056 students and teachers. In the current year of 2023, five incidents of school shootings have been reported so far.
Whenever such an incident happens, the demand for stricter gun control acts starts .After the 2012 Sandy school massacre, legislation to tighten background checks on gun buyers failed to pass the Senate.
After the Uvalde massacre last year, there was a movement on the issue once again, but the gun lobby is so powerful that there can be no improvement in gun control.
In the year 2010, the US Supreme Court ruled that every American citizen has a constitutional right to own assault rifles and handguns. Whenever there is talk of tightening the gun control act, the Republican Party blames the judgment and blocks the amendment of the law.
